Learn about Paraiba

paraiba.jpgA variety of Tourmaline that is rare and exquisite, Paraiba was discovered quite recently—in the 1980s—and was immediately sought after for its vivid blue-green hue. This gem is mined in the Paraiba state of Brazil and forms under unusual conditions that imbue it with electric color that comes from trace elements like manganese and copper (the latter the same element that shades turquoise). The high color saturation, beautiful hues and rarity of Paraiba make it easily the most pricey Tourmaline, the price generally determined in response to the color, not the size. In fact, Paraiba stones are generally not very big, but what they lack in heft, they more than make up for in hue.
