The African Tsavorite Garnet is green—a brilliant, vibrant green akin to Emerald. Typically a small gem, and quite valuable, the vivid green hue of Tsavorite comes from vanadium or chromium. First discovered in Tanzania by a British gem prospector in the 1960s, “Green Grossularite” was little known to the greater public until Tiffany & Co. launched a marketing campaign to promote it in the 1970s. To date, this gem has only been found in East African bush land: Tanzania, Kenya, Toliara Province and Madagascar. Its high refractive index and sparkling light compete with Emerald, as do its hardness, durability and lovely deep hue.
